Senior Scientist, Medicinal Chemistry
Drug Hunter
Location: Cambridge Massachusetts
Time: 8 months ago
The Opportunity:
- Does delivering a great development candidate thrill you? That’s what we live for, too, and we aim to build the best environment in the industry to discover the drugs that will make a difference for patients. We are looking for a self-motivated, creative, and experienced medicinal chemist to join our team and help drive projects from lead generation through candidate selection in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment.
- We take what we do seriously, but we still want to hear about your go-to karaoke song, what your favorite pets and/or kids are up to, and what amazing vacation you just took. You’ll have fun in our enthusiastic and energetic environment, where you’ll face new challenges every day.
- If you are flexible and fearless in the face of rapidly evolving data, then we want you to join us and discover the next generation of impactful medicines!
Your Role:
- Be an integral part of a multi-disciplinary lead optimization team (alongside pharmacologists, computational chemists, biophysicists, and DMPK and pharmaceutics scientists), applying your drug hunting experience toward identifying development candidate compounds.
- Design and facilitate the synthesis of compounds to address medicinal chemistry challenges. We’re proud of having a productive in-house lab; contributing from the bench is not required but is a big plus.
- Work with experimentalists at Relay Tx as well as with teams at CROs to advance your projects.
- Proactively and effectively communicate your work.
- Collaborate with team members to enable and apply cutting-edge high-throughput chemistry, in silico methods of compound design and data analysis, and insight from biophysical experiments to facilitate rapid decision making around lead optimization.
- Speak your mind! We will count on your contribution to cross-functional discussions about the latest science and to Relay Tx’s internal medicinal chemistry education efforts.
- Help build an empowering, collegial, and effective culture. Face-to-face interactions are important at Relay Tx; we’re flexible around working hours and styles, but being on site at least three days per week is a recipe for success.
Your Background:
- An education in chemistry with an emphasis on synthetic organic chemistry, synthetic methodology or a related field.
- The equivalent of PhD + ≥4 years of relevant drug discovery industry experience in medicinal chemistry, with an emphasis on small molecule drug discovery. Our current portfolio focuses on oncology and rare disease, so experience in those therapeutic areas is a plus.
- An understanding of the theory behind common medicinal chemistry challenges, and you can point to experience designing compounds to address them.
- An ability to enable your compound design with in silico predictive tools and structure-based drug design.
- Strong communication skills, an ability to flex to different work styles, and a belief that the best outcomes result from bringing out the creativity of your colleagues.
- Commitment to building an energetic, collaborative, and open company culture and contributing to the company’s success.

About Relay Therapeutics
Relay Therapeutics is a clinical-stage precision medicines company transforming the drug discovery process with the goal of bringing life-changing therapies to patients. Built on unparalleled insights into protein motion and how this dynamic behavior relates to protein function, we aim to effectively drug protein targets that have previously been intractable, with an initial focus on enhancing small molecule therapeutic discovery in targeted oncology. Our Dynamo platform integrates an array of leading-edge experimental and computational approaches to provide a differentiated understanding of protein structure and motion to drug these targets. We have built a world-class team of leading experts from each of these disciplines, and they are driven by a deep collaboration at every step of our drug discovery process.
Our team is equal parts fearless and relentless, with a shared passion for working collaboratively in intellectually stimulating environments. If you’re excited by the challenge of putting protein motion at the heart of drug discovery and passionate about making a difference in the lives of patients, join us!
